Experimental observation of flow-induced vibrations of a transversely oscillating D-section prism

Fluid–structure interactions of non-circular prisms are significance from a scientific and practical viewpoint. In this paper, we present new experimental observation flow-induced vibrations associated spectral characteristics transversely oscillating D-section prism at an angle attack ? varying 0° to 180°, where = 180° represent the configuration with upstream curved flat part, respectively. The Reynolds number range is 530–9620, reduced velocity 1–32, based on projected width in crossflow direction. mass ratio 11.35, structural damping still water 0.0036. Based response amplitudes traits, D-prism exhibits typical vortex-induced vibration (VIV) 0°–30°, first transition 45°–60°, small-amplitude VIV 105°–135°, second 150°–165°, combined VIV-galloping 90°, pure galloping 75° 180°. between low- high-amplitude branches found be hysteretic intermittent. Flow physics behind responses further elucidated by wake patterns high-speed camera flow spectra downstream prism.
